Molelos
It is in Molelos region of Tondela, in the district of Viseu, that we can find this magnificent black pottery.
The clay used to make these dishes is a kaolin clay and is very resistant to heat. After molding and crinkling with a rolled pebble the clay goes into the oven. It is sealed for 7 to 9 hours. The cooking is made by reduction heat and preventing the entry of oxygen. The pottery becomes black and practically impermeable.
This type of pottery can still be found in Bisalhães (Vila Real) and also in other parts of the world as in Asturias in Spain, Mexico and in Ukraine.
