Barcelos
The remains of pottery and kilns in Barcelos region, along with the abundance of raw materials in the region, is proof of production of ceramics in Barcelos in the time of the Castreja culture (6th century BC).
The red clay of the Galegos region (Martinho and Santa Maria) is still produced in the traditional manner on the potter’s wheel.
Nowadays, red clay ceramics are primarily decorated in white and seen as utilitarian pottery that can also be used in the oven.
Dishes to bake chorizo, casserole dishes for cooking rice, roasting dishes, the bowls for caldo verde soup and mugs for red wine are some the ceramics commonly seen in fairs and markets all over the country.
